HERMES ‘oceanographic station helps local communities manage coastal zone with real-time information
THE OCEANOGRAPHIC STATION INSTALLED IN THE PAGGAIO MUNICIPALITY COASTAL ZONE PROVIDES INFORMATION ABOUT THE SEA TO LOCAL AUTHORITIES AND BUSINESSES
The HERMES oceanographic station deployed at Kariani coastal zone, at 22 m depth, is a system monitoring and transmitting in real-time the conditions prevailing at sea in this specific area. Measurements of the sea currents at all layers of the water column and of the waves, as wave height, wave period and direction of wave propagation are collected at hourly intervals, stored at the system and transmitted to a web-site. Through the operation of the HERMES system, coastal managers will be able to assess the impact of waves and currents in shaping the Kariani coastline and design the appropriate structures to mitigate coastal erosion and reduce the impact of climate change. In parallel, fishermen and users of the coast will be informed on the conditions of the waves and currents, thus increasing marine safety.
