eWAsTER „Preventing e-waste from polluting MED water by turning waste into a resource“
On 21st November 2023, the Monitoring Committee of the Interreg Euro- MED Programme approved 56 projects. More information is available here. The total financial allocation of the approved projects for this call is €118 628 654,70 (including Interreg funds and national co-financing).
The list of approved projects included the eWAsTER project “Preventing e-waste from polluting MED water by turning waste into a resource” in which the Union of Bulgarian Black Sea Local Authorities (UBBSLA) is an official partner from Bulgaria. The project consortium is leaded by the partner from Portugal – Alentejo Science and Technology Park.
eWaster aims to promote local and regional policies for better e-waste management, to reduce e-waste environmental damage in the selected areas, while promoting new innovative eco-business models based on the conversion of the currently lineal electrical and electronic (E&E) sector into a sustainable circular model. The unification of waste management criteria in the transnational MED area is essential, since otherwise it could facilitate the dynamization of the illegal movement of e-waste from areas with stricter regulations towards areas with more permissive regulations. To stop this threat, it is necessary to take into account common joint planning, and coordinated business promotion.
eWaster gather 11 partners and 14 associated, in tandems of technical and political bodies, covering 6 EU MS and 1 IPA country, which will approve 10 new Action Plans for e-waste management covering the main recommendations of the “Circular Electronics Initiative” from the EU Circular Economy AP.
The Interreg Euro-MED Programme supports cooperation across Mediterranean borders. The Programme provides funds for projects developed and managed by public administrations, universities, private and civil society organisations and brings together partners from 69 regions of 14 countries from the Northern shore of the Mediterranean with a common objective: a climate neutral and resilient society for the benefit of its citizens. The total programme budget amounts to about 294M€ for the 2021-2027 period.
