Even though the situation of Danube countries today shows an east-west divide it has to be considered that the potential for renewable energy production is by far not exhausted also in the advanced Danube regions and that the introduction of innovative energy storage and sector coupling applications has just started to gain momentum. Challenges particularly hit medium-sized and smaller cities, often located outside the densely populated central regions. These cities do not have the area to produce enough various renewable energy for their own consumption and would substantially benefit from a more decentralised energy supply. Solutions that can benefit from production on their own (sector coupling) and support an efficient use of renewable energies through different measures (energy storage) are urgently needed. Within CSSC Lab, several good practice regions practice will transfer their knowledge to accelerate the up-take of CSSC solutions across the Danube area which is at very low level because public authorities possess little knowledge about these applications and shy the risks related to such investments. To overcome this barrier, the CSSC Lab project will implement capacity building activities for municipalities and establish demo-centers in different partner regions to demonstrate the viability of CSSC solutions for medium-sized and smaller cities in the Danube region.
Main objective: The CSSC project addresses the energy security and energy efficiency demand of medium-sized and smaller target cities in the Danube area, aiming to accelerate the up-take of energy storage and sector coupling solutions. To build up the capacities of municipalities and related city actors to assess, define and implement concrete implementation projects, the CSSC Lab project will:
– develop a set of model solution for typical urban CSSC use cases, together with a toolkit for the assessment of potential CSSC applications in terms of energy efficiency indicators, operational requirements, related business models and financing solutions
– a comprehensive capacity building programme for municipalities with local basic and advanced trainings, complementary webinars and individual city coaching sessions will be developed and piloted
– pilot investments will be established in four demo-centers in different locations in the project region to demonstrate the feasibility and performance of typical CSSC solutions
– a series of study visits and demo sessions will allow city representatives from all parts of the project region to learn from practical demo-cases implemented under Danube region framework conditions.
All project activities will be implemented in transnational cooperation of the project partnership and in close interaction of potential replicator cities from ASPs and further interested stakeholders from Danube area municipalities.
